Back to Roots Mushroom Grow Kit (review)

Foodiacs is a new online community for food enthusiasts that started on September 6th. The site is tailored to people who are passionate about food and connects them with product offerings that are exclusive to the site.  Each Foodiac offering is available for a limited time and at a limited quantity.    The folks at Foodiac recognize the quality and passion that goes into creating artisan foods and their goal is to bring lesser known, but high quality items to the forefront of the food community in a unique way.

Foodiacs has exclusive product offerings and events booked through March, 2012.  Events launch every one or two weeks on Tuesdays at 12 p.m. and feature a variety of unique food related products.  Foodiacs also shares local food related events in regional areas.

Back to the Roots is the first event to be featured on Foodiacs and what an excellent idea this is!

Back to the Roots was founded by Alejandro Velez & Nikhil Arora during their last semester at UC Berkeley in 2009. Two months away from graduation, and heading into the corporate world of investment banking & consulting, they came across the idea during a class lecture of being able to potentially grow gourmet mushrooms entirely on recycled coffee grounds. Inspired by the idea of turning waste into wages & fresh, local food, they experimented in Alex’s fraternity kitchen, ultimately growing one test bucket of tasty oyster mushrooms on recycled coffee grounds. With that one bucket, some initial interest from Whole Foods & Chez Panisse and a $5,000 grant from the UC Berkeley Chancellor for social innovation, they decided to forget the corporate route, and instead, become full-time urban mushroom farmers!

The Back to Roots Goal is to create unique, enjoyable, and sustainable products for their customers.  They are currently on track to collect, divert and reuse 1 million lbs of coffee grounds this year from Peet’s Coffee & Tea for use as soil in their Grow-it-Yourself Mushroom Garden!   This kit allows you grow up to 1 1/2 lbs of gourmet, tasty oyster mushrooms in as little as 10 days…right from the box!   Just open the side of the box, mist twice a day and wait for the harvest – it doesn’t get much easier than that.   Every kit is not only safe and sustainable, but 100% satisfaction guaranteed and perfect for the classroom or the apartment gardener.

I received a Back to Roots Mushroom Kit yesterday and I opened it up and started misting it today.  I think this was probably the simplest gardening task that I’ve ever performed and can’t wait to share photos of the results with you all!

Each kit costs $40 and is good for at least two harvests (some people have been able to get as much as four).  Right now every Foodiac who purchases at least two boxes through their site will receive a third box and a classroom curriculum to be donated to the school of their choice.    You must hurry though because this event ends on Tuesday, September 20th at 11:59 a.m. et.

Be sure to connect with the Foodiac Community through Facebook or Twitter to learn of upcoming offers and events.  You can also join the mailing list at their Website.
